When is the best time to visit Albania?

For the coast, late May to early October. Within that, the widely agreed sweet spot is May to mid-June and late September to early October — warm sea, lower rates, no crush. July and August are the hottest, busiest and most expensive weeks, and the ones you need to book furthest ahead.

When is the best time to visit Albania? The coast runs late May to early October, with May–June and late September–early October the sweet spot. When to book for each season.

The shoulder months, and why everyone names them

May–June and late September–early October come up again and again for one reason: summer conditions without summer volume. The sea is warm, the coast road is drivable without queues, and rooms cost a fraction of their August rate.

The catch is the edges of the season. Some coastal properties do not open until it starts properly and some close in early October, so a very early or very late trip can find a half-shuttered town — worth checking a property is actually open for your dates.

How far ahead to book

For July and August on the Riviera, months rather than weeks — Ksamil and Dhërmi have limited stock and the good rooms go first. For the shoulder months you have far more slack, and for the inland towns you can usually book close in.

The northern Alps are the exception: guesthouse capacity in Theth and Valbonë is small enough that summer beds should be secured before anything else in the trip.

It depends which Albania you want

Beaches narrow you to roughly June through September, and the only real question is how much company you want. Mountains narrow you further — the high passes are usually walkable only from around June to October.

Cities, castles and old towns have no closed season at all. Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër and Shkodër are all better without the summer heat, and cost less.

Common questions

What is the cheapest time to visit Albania?
Winter by a wide margin, then the season's edges in April and late October. Coastal rates in August can be several times their off-season level.
Can you swim in Albania in October?
Often in the first half of the month — the Ionian holds its warmth longer than the air does. By late October it is a gamble.
When is the Albanian Riviera least crowded?
May and early June, then late September into October: the same conditions as peak season without the volume.
Is August a bad time to visit Albania?
It is the hottest, busiest and priciest month, and the hardest to find good rooms in. If August is your only window, book early and favour the coast over the inland towns.
