Inland until late May, coastal after it. March and April belong to Berat, Gjirokastër and Tirana — green, mild and empty. From mid-May the Riviera starts opening and by June it is in full swing with none of the August crowd. The mountain passes stay shut until roughly June.

March and April — the towns

This is the best time of year for the inland towns. Berat and Gjirokastër are green, comfortable to walk and almost empty, which matters because both involve castle climbs that are punishing in summer. Tirana is at its most pleasant too.

The coast is not yet open in any meaningful sense. Sea temperatures are low and a lot of Riviera accommodation has not started its season, so a beach trip this early risks a half-shuttered town.

May and June — the best-value beach weeks

This is the window regulars keep to themselves. From late May the sea is warm enough, the coast road is drivable without queues, and rooms in Ksamil, Himarë and Sarandë cost a fraction of their August rate. By mid-June it is properly warm with the crowds still weeks away.

The catch is the edge of the season. Some coastal properties do not open until it starts in earnest, so confirm a place is actually open for your dates rather than assuming.

What is still closed

The Albanian Alps. The Valbona Pass is generally walkable only from around June, and mid-May attempts are routinely advised against because of snow still lying on the traverse — this is the single most common spring planning mistake.

If the mountains are the point of your trip, spring is too early. Come in summer or plan a coastal trip instead.
