Where should I stay in Berat?
In Mangalem or Gorica — the two old quarters facing each other across the Osum — or inside the castle itself, which is still inhabited and has guesthouses. Berat is the easier of Albania's two UNESCO towns to stay in, and it is at its best in the evening once the coaches have gone.
Mangalem, Gorica, or inside the castle
Mangalem is the postcard side: white Ottoman houses stacked up the hill under the castle, the 'thousand windows' the town is named for. Gorica faces it across the river and gives you the view of Mangalem instead of being in it — many people prefer that.
The castle above is not a ruin but a living quarter with families and guesthouses inside the walls. Staying up there is the most memorable option and the least convenient — it is a real climb.
Getting there, and why to stay the night
Berat is the closest of the UNESCO towns to Tirana, which makes it the standard first or last inland stop on an itinerary and an easy day trip from the capital.
But a day trip misses the point. Both quarters empty of visitors in the late afternoon, and the low evening light on the white houses is what people remember. One night is enough; zero is a mistake.
When to come
Spring and autumn are the best — Berat sits inland in a river valley and midday in July or August is genuinely draining, especially with the castle climb.
It stays open all year, unlike the coast, and winter here is quiet and cheap. The surrounding hills also have wineries that take visitors, which is a better reason to linger than most guidebooks suggest.
Common questions
- Is one night enough in Berat?
- Yes for the castle, both quarters and a museum. The night itself is what buys you the town at dusk and dawn without the day trippers.
- Should I stay in Mangalem or Gorica?
- Mangalem to be in the famous quarter, Gorica to look at it. Gorica is quieter; Mangalem is closer to the castle climb.
- Can you stay inside Berat castle?
- Yes — the castle is still a lived-in neighbourhood with guesthouses inside the walls. It is the most atmospheric choice and the steepest walk.
- Is Berat better than Gjirokastër?
- Berat is closer to Tirana, gentler underfoot and easier for a short trip. Gjirokastër is quieter and suits a route heading south towards the coast.
