Berat or Gjirokastër — which should I stay in?

What each one is

Berat is the 'city of a thousand windows' — Ottoman houses climbing both banks above the Osum, with a castle at the top people still live inside. It reads best from across the river and the walking is manageable.

Gjirokastër is the stone city: slate roofs, a fortress over everything, and steep cobbled lanes that are real work. It feels less visited and more severe.

Which is the easier stay

Berat, comfortably. It is nearer Tirana so it works as a first or last night, and the old quarters need no serious climb. A night lets you see it in evening light, which is when it is best.

Gjirokastër suits people already travelling towards Sarandë, since it sits on that road. It also rewards an overnight more than Berat does, because it empties completely of day visitors.

Do you have to choose?

Not with a week. They share a single UNESCO inscription and pairing them with Butrint is an established route through the south.

But they are similar enough in kind that back-to-back nights blur them. Splitting them either side of a few coastal nights works better.

Is one night enough in Berat?

For the castle, both old quarters and a museum, yes. The night mainly buys you the town at dusk and dawn without the coaches.

Which is better for families?

Berat. Gjirokastër's cobbles and gradients are hard going with small children or a pushchair.

Are Berat and Gjirokastër both UNESCO sites?

They are inscribed together as one World Heritage property, 'Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra'.

Can I do both in one trip?

Yes, but they are several hours apart with no quick hop between them. Treat them as separate stops on a route rather than a day trip from one to the other.
