Where do you stay to visit Butrint?
In Ksamil or Sarandë — Butrint is an archaeological park inside a protected lagoon, and there is nowhere to stay at the site itself. Ksamil is the closest, about fifteen minutes away; Sarandë is a little further with far more rooms. Allow two to three hours for the ruins.
What is actually there
Butrint is unusually layered even by Mediterranean standards: a Greek settlement, a Roman colony with a theatre still intact, an early Christian baptistery, a Byzantine basilica and a Venetian fortress, all on one wooded peninsula between a lagoon and the channel facing Corfu.
The walk around the site is shaded and mostly flat, which makes it far more bearable in summer than the inland towns.
Where to base yourself
Ksamil is the nearest bookable place — a short drive up the road, which is why so many people visiting Butrint sleep there. Sarandë is twenty minutes or so further and has a much wider choice of rooms and restaurants.
Either works as a base for a day that takes in both Butrint and the Blue Eye, which is the standard southern day out.
When to go
Early or late in the day, whatever the month — the site is quietest before the coaches and again in the last hours, and the light on the theatre and the lagoon is better at both ends.
It is open year-round and is one of the few southern attractions that works out of season, when Ksamil itself has largely closed. Spring is arguably the best: green, quiet and comfortable to walk.
