Where should I go in Albania in summer?
The coast, or the mountains — summer is the only time both are fully open. July and August bring the warmest sea and the busiest beaches, the highest prices of the year, and the reliable window for the Theth–Valbonë crossing. It is also the season you must book furthest ahead.
The coast in high summer
Ksamil has the best water and feels its size — the beaches are small and in August they are full. Dhërmi runs on beach clubs and late music at the Riviera's highest prices. Himarë is the calmer middle, Sarandë the practical base with the most rooms, and Durrës the easy sandy option an hour from Tirana.
Everything is open, which is the real advantage: villages that shut for eight months of the year are fully running.
The Alps — the only reliable window
July and August are the dependable months for the Valbona Pass, inside a broader season running roughly June to October. This is when the crossing is straightforwardly walkable and when the guesthouses in Theth and Valbonë are all open.
It is also when their handful of beds disappears. Book the mountain leg before anything else in the trip — capacity in both villages is genuinely tiny.
What summer costs you
Heat and crowds. Inland, midday in Berat or Gjirokastër is draining, particularly on the castle climbs — if your trip is mostly towns, another season is better. On the coast, the popular beaches are busy from mid-morning.
Prices peak across the board and the best rooms go months rather than weeks in advance. If August is your only window, book early and favour the coast over the inland towns.
Common questions
- Is August too hot in Albania?
- For the inland towns, often yes — Berat and Gjirokastër at midday are hard work. On the coast the heat is manageable; the crowds are the bigger issue.
- How far ahead should I book for summer in Albania?
- Months rather than weeks for the Riviera in July and August, and earlier still for Theth or Valbonë, where there are very few beds.
- Where is least crowded in Albania in summer?
- Himarë and the smaller bays around it are calmer than Ksamil or Dhërmi. The inland towns are quieter still, if you can take the heat.
- Is the Theth to Valbonë hike open in summer?
- Yes — July and August are the most reliable months for the pass, and the only period when all the guesthouses at both ends are open.
