Where should I stay in Theth?
In a family guesthouse — that is essentially the only option, and there are not many of them. Theth is a village scattered along a valley floor in the Albanian Alps, at one end of the pass crossing to Valbonë. Beds are genuinely limited and sell out in July and August, so book before you travel.
What staying in Theth is like
Guesthouses here are family homes with rooms, usually including dinner and breakfast because there is little else to eat. That is not a downgrade — it is the reason people remember the place — but it is not a hotel, and you should not expect hotel service or facilities.
The village spreads along the valley rather than clustering, so 'in Theth' can mean a twenty-minute walk from the church. If you are walking the pass, staying nearer the trailhead end saves you distance on a long day.
Getting there
By road from Shkodër, over a mountain route that is slow and best driven in daylight. Most visitors arrive on an organised transfer rather than driving themselves, and most sleep in Shkodër the night before.
The other way in is on foot over the pass from Valbonë, which is how a large share of visitors arrive — which is also why you need a bed booked at both ends, not one.
The season is short, and it is the whole story
The Valbona Pass is generally walkable from around June to October, inside a wider hiking season of roughly May to the end of October. Mid-May attempts are routinely advised against because of snow still lying on the traverse.
July and August are the reliable months and the busiest, and that is exactly when the handful of beds disappear. Late June and September give you the same trail with more room to book.
