In the centre around the Kolë Idromeno pedestrian street, where the cafés, restaurants and most of the hotels are. Shkodër is where trips into the Albanian Alps begin — the Komani Lake ferry and the transfers to Theth and Valbonë both leave from here, usually very early.

Centre, or out by the lake

The centre is compact and walkable, built around a restored pedestrian street of Austro-Hungarian facades, cafés and bars. Almost everything you need is within a few blocks, and this is where you want to be if you are catching an early transfer.

Out towards Lake Shkodra it is quieter and greener, with guesthouses looking onto the water. Better for a restful night, less convenient for a 6am pickup.

Why people actually stay here

Shkodër is the staging post. The Komani Lake ferry — a passenger boat through a steep reservoir gorge, and the usual approach to Valbonë — starts with a very early road transfer from here. So does the road to Theth.

That means most visitors sleep in Shkodër the night before going into the mountains and often the night they come back out. Booking those two nights is part of planning the Alps leg, not an afterthought.

When to come

Shkodër is busiest in the mountain season, roughly June to October, because that is when the Alps traffic passes through. Rooms in July and August fill on the back of that.

Outside the season it is a normal working city — open, cheap and quiet, with Rozafa castle above the confluence and the lake beside it worth a day in their own right.
