Is September a good time to visit Albania?

It is arguably the best month of the year on the coast. The sea is still warm from a summer of heat, the August crowds have gone home, the water is clearer without the volume of swimmers, and rates drop sharply from the first week. Everything on the Riviera is still open.

Is September a good time to visit Albania? The sea is still warm, the beaches have emptied and prices have dropped. September is the best month on the Albanian coast — where to go and what is still open.

Why September beats August

The sea does not cool at the same rate as the air. The Ionian holds its summer warmth well into September, so you get August swimming conditions in half-empty water — Ksamil in particular is a different place once the peak weeks end.

Prices fall with the crowds. The same room on the Riviera commonly costs a fraction of its August rate from early September, which is the single clearest reason to move a beach trip by three weeks.

Where to go

Ksamil, for the reason above — it is the destination most improved by the drop in numbers. Himarë and Dhërmi are calm rather than crowded, and Sarandë keeps its full range of restaurants and rooms open while feeling like a town again.

It is also a good month for combining the coast with the inland towns: Berat and Gjirokastër are past the worst of the summer heat and comfortable to walk.

What to watch for

The season has an end and September sits close to it. Everything is reliably open through the month, but from the last days some Riviera properties begin closing for the year — so confirm your dates rather than assuming, particularly for the final week.

The Alps are still walkable: the Valbona Pass generally stays open into October, and September is one of the best months for it — the same trail as August with far fewer people on it.

Common questions

Can you swim in Albania in September?
Yes, comfortably throughout the month. The Ionian retains its summer warmth much longer than the air does.
Is Ksamil good in September?
It is at its best. The water is the same as August and the crowds that make its small beaches difficult have gone.
Are prices lower in September in Albania?
Markedly. Coastal rates drop from the first weeks of the month as demand falls away, while the weather barely changes.
Is everything still open in September?
Through most of the month, yes. Some Riviera properties start closing in the final days, so confirm your dates if you are travelling at the very end.
