Where should I stay on the Albanian Riviera?
Sarandë if you want choice and convenience, Ksamil if the beaches are the point, Himarë if you want quiet, Dhërmi if you want the livelier end, and Vlorë if you are starting the coast road from the north. They are an hour or two apart but feel like different holidays.
Sarandë — the practical base
The biggest town on this coast and the one with the most rooms at the most price points. It stays open longer either side of the season than the villages do, and Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye are all short trips from it.
The trade-off is that Sarandë is a town rather than a resort: the seafront is busy, and the best swimming is a drive away rather than outside your door.
Ksamil — the beaches
The islets and shallow turquoise water are what most people have seen in photographs, and it delivers on that in June or September. In August it is extremely busy and the small beaches feel it.
Rooms here are mostly apartments and small guesthouses rather than large hotels, and the choice is much thinner than in Sarandë. Book early for summer.
Himarë and Dhërmi — the middle Riviera
Himarë is the calmer of the two: a working town with good beaches either side and a slower evening. It is the pick if you want the coast without the crowd.
Dhërmi is the loud end — beach clubs, music, and the Riviera's highest summer prices. Excellent if that is what you came for, wearing if it is not.
Vlorë — the northern gateway
Where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, and the start of the coast road south over the Llogara pass. It is a bigger, more everyday city than the villages below it, with boat trips out to Karaburun and Sazan.
Useful as a first or last night on a Riviera trip rather than a week-long base.
Common questions
- Which is the best town on the Albanian Riviera?
- Ksamil has the best beaches, Sarandë the most rooms and the easiest logistics, Himarë the best balance of the two. There is no single answer — it depends whether beaches or convenience matter more.
- How long should I stay on the Albanian Riviera?
- Four or five nights to see more than one beach without rushing. Three works from a single base.
- Is Ksamil worth it, or is it too crowded?
- It is genuinely beautiful and genuinely crowded in July and August. In late May, June or late September it is the best beach destination in the country.
- When do Riviera hotels open and close?
- Broadly late May to early October, with Sarandë open longer than the villages. Outside that window many properties in Ksamil and Dhërmi are closed entirely.
