Where should I stay for New Year in Albania?
Tirana. New Year is the one winter date in Albania with a real atmosphere behind it — the main square hosts an outdoor celebration, restaurants and bars run late, and the city is at its liveliest in a month when the coast is closed. Why Tirana rather than the coast
Because the coast is shut. Ksamil, Dhërmi and most of the Riviera are closed for the season, so a seaside New Year means an empty town and nowhere open for dinner — the opposite of what people are booking for.
Tirana is the country's only genuinely year-round destination, and New Year is when that matters most. Skanderbeg Square is the focus of the public celebration, with Blloku carrying the restaurants and bars around it.
Where in the city to book
Blloku if you want to walk home from dinner — it is the densest concentration of restaurants and bars in the country and the natural base for the night itself. Around Skanderbeg Square if you want to be on top of the public celebration.
Either is walkable to the other. What matters more than the area is booking early: this is the single date in winter when Tirana's rooms tighten.
What else the trip can include
Berat and Gjirokastër are both open, cheap and beautiful in winter light, and either makes an easy addition either side of the New Year nights. The Dajti cable car above Tirana runs year-round for the view over the city.
If you want snow, the northern mountains have it, though the high villages are largely closed and the ski areas around Dardhë get going properly from January.
