Where should I stay at the Llogara pass?
There are a handful of mountain hotels and lodges in the national park at the top of the pass, which are worth it for the view and the cool air. Most people do not sleep here at all — they drive over it between Vlorë and Dhërmi, and the drive itself is the attraction.
The pass, and why it is famous
The road climbs from the Adriatic side through pine forest to a saddle above a thousand metres, then drops in a long series of switchbacks onto the Ionian coast. The moment the sea appears below is the single most photographed view of the drive south.
It is also the boundary between two different coasts: flat and sandy to the north, steep and clear to the south. Crossing it is how the Albanian Riviera begins.
Staying at the top, or either side
The park at the summit has a small number of hotels and lodges, geared to walkers and to travellers who want the mountain air rather than the beach. In midsummer it is markedly cooler up here than on the coast, which is the real argument for a night.
Otherwise Vlorë on the north side and Dhërmi or Himarë on the south are the practical bases, both within an easy drive of the summit.
When to drive it
In daylight, always. The switchbacks are tight, the drops are real and the road is shared with buses and lorries — this is not a route to take for the first time at night.
The pass is at its best from late spring to autumn. In winter it can see snow and closures, which is worth checking if you are heading down the coast out of season.
