How many days do I need in Albania?
Seven nights is the comfortable minimum for a first trip: one inland town plus a coastal base, without living on the road. Five works if you pick a single region. Ten to fourteen is what it takes to add the northern Alps without cutting the coast short.
Three to four nights
Pick one thing. Tirana plus a day in Berat is a genuinely good short break with no long drives, and both have rooms available year-round. Or spend the whole time on the southern coast around Sarandë.
What does not work in four nights is combining the northern mountains with the southern beaches — the distances are short on paper and long in practice.
Five to seven nights
The standard shape, and the one most people should book: one or two nights in Tirana or Berat, then four or five on the Ionian coast, with Butrint and the Blue Eye as half-days from there.
Two bookings rather than five. Adding Gjirokastër on the way south costs one night and fits naturally into the route.
Ten to fourteen nights
Enough to add the north properly — Shkodër, the Komani Lake crossing and the Theth–Valbonë walk, which between transfers and a rest day wants three or four nights on its own.
It also lets you drive the Riviera end to end rather than settling in one beach town, which means two coastal bases instead of one.
Common questions
- Is 5 days enough for Albania?
- For one region, yes. For the whole country, no — five days spread nationwide is mostly transit.
- How many nights should I book on the coast?
- Four or five to see more than one beach and still have unhurried days. Three is workable from a single base.
- Can I see Albania and the Alps in one week?
- Only by cutting the coast almost entirely — the Theth–Valbonë leg and its transfers take three to four days of a seven-day trip.
- What is the best one-week itinerary?
- Two nights Tirana or Berat, Gjirokastër in passing, then four nights around Sarandë or Ksamil with Butrint and the Blue Eye as day trips.
