Where should I stay in Durrës?
Along the beach strip south of the city for sand and sea, or in the old centre near the amphitheatre if history and restaurants matter more than being on the water. Durrës is Albania's most convenient beach — long, flat, shallow, and under an hour from Tirana's airport.
Beach strip or old town
The beach runs for kilometres south of the city and is where nearly all the hotels are. It is sandy and shallow — the easiest swimming in the country for small children — and it is developed, busy and unglamorous compared with the Ionian coast.
The old centre is a different proposition: a Roman amphitheatre in the middle of a working port city, Byzantine walls, and restaurants that are not aimed at sunbathers. Stay here if you want a city with a beach nearby rather than a beach holiday.
Getting there — the closest coast to the capital
This is Durrës's real advantage: it is the nearest beach to Tirana and its airport, reachable in well under an hour. You can land and be on the sand the same morning, which is not true of anywhere on the Riviera.
That makes it the practical choice for a short break, a first or last night, or a trip where a long transfer south is not worth it.
When to come
The beach season runs roughly June to September, and August is when Albanian families holiday here — busy, loud and cheerful rather than international. June and September are quieter and cheaper.
Unlike the Riviera villages, Durrës is a substantial city, so it does not close out of season. The amphitheatre and the old town are worth a winter day trip from Tirana in their own right.
What it costs, and when
Durrës is the cheapest of Albania's mainstream beach towns, and the reason is supply: the strip south of the city is dense with apartments and mid-size hotels competing for the same guests. Three things move the price — the month, how far you are from the sand, and whether you take an apartment or a hotel room. A block back from the beach is markedly cheaper than the front row, and it is a five-minute walk.
August is the peak because this is where Albanian families holiday, and rates in it run several times the shoulder-season price. June and September cost a fraction of that for the same sea. Out of season Durrës is a working city rather than a resort, so rooms stay cheap all winter — which is why it is a realistic base for a non-beach trip.
